Skunk Removal Essex CT

Skunks have been active in Essex CT lately. Skunks under sheds, skunks under steps. Had a large skunk stuck in a window well. One persons dog was sprayed and they made the mistake of letting him in the house. If your dog is sprayed by a skunk do not let them in the house. Dogs will run around trying to wipe the skunk spray off on your rugs and furniture.  For Essex CT Skunk Removal call RF Wildlife 860-510-6313 I am located on the border between Old Saybrook and Essex.

Skunk Breeding season starts late winter.

You may notice in Essex CT that around February the smell of skunk is common.  This is a good time to check under decks, under sheds and under steps for den sites. Here is a couple of picture of what a skunk entry looks like.

Skunk Breeding season

My first skunk removal calls for the year typically start around Valentines day. Since being in business like clockwork I would get a few calls on Valentines day. This year that did not happen. The extreme winter is most likely to blame. Temperatures at night are well below freezing, with negative wind chills.  Shoreline towns such as Old Saybrook, Essex, Madison, Clinton, Old Lyme have over twelve inches of snow pack making movement for skunks difficult. Skunk removal’s in these towns are normally my first of the season due to the fact we tend to have less snow, and slightly warmer temps. City skunks also seem to be hunkered down. Skunk removal in West Haven, New Haven, Hamden, Branford is typically active all year. Towards the end of February Durham, Haddam, and Middletown skunk removal calls are very active.

Skunk removal calls come at two times a year mostly, the skunk breeding season in February, and when the young skunks start leaving the den in June. Now that skunks seem to be running late this year Skunk removals will probably pick up late June into July. Fourth of July picnics may have some unwelcome guests this year due to this. Young skunks are active at any time near the den site. Young skunk spray just as much if not more than older skunks. The spray is not as potent as an adult, but still stinks. Skunk control in Essex CT picks up during the summer. Skunk control calls in Madison, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Clinton ,Old Lyme also pick up at this time when cottages are opened for the season.  Call 860-510-6313 for any skunk related Problems.

Skunk Breeding season, Love is in the air

Skunk breeding season is upon us, and love is in the air literally.

Pepe Le Pew

February – March is the breeding time of the skunk. You may have noticed that you have been smelling skunk for the past couple of weeks. Driving you may have noticed more skunks hit on the road. The male skunk will travel many miles at this time of year searching for a mate. Just like Pepe Le Pew, they are oblivious to all else but finding a mate. He will be traveling in areas that are foreign to him and may spend the day under your shed, or porch just passing through.  When they are breeding on your property you have probably been woken up in the middle of the night eyes watering, and coughing, or gaging because the smell is so strong. Now is the time to remove the skunks before she has a litter. Male skunks will sometimes fight to the death, and will spray each other for the right to mate. Female skunks will also spray suitors that are not up to her standards. They can be for the lack of a better term be trigger happy, and may spray you or your pet if you get too close. Finding a skunk sleeping out in the semi open is more common this time of year. The skunks can be wounded, or just plain exhausted from their night of fighting.  If you are brave enough to approach it be careful skunks can carry many diseases including rabies, and distemper. Relocating skunks in Connecticut is illegal.  Skunks  are a rabies vector species RVS and transporting one from one area to the next can spread rabies to that area. The animal may look and act healthy and still be infected with rabies. The typical signs of rabies appear in the later stages of the disease.
